Do you go to Waynesboro or Charlottesville to shop?

Following up on last year’s story about Crozet being in Waynesboro’s market area, and the nearing completion of Target and Kohl’s, in addition to the Super Wal-Mart, Martin’s Grocery store, etc. …

Starr HIll to expand in Crozet

If you missed this story in yesterday’s DP, take a look - Starr Hill Brewery seeks to expand its Crozet offerings besides slightly cheaper six-packs at the Great Valu. The brewery, located in a 15,000-square-foot warehouse that was once home to ConAgra Frozen Foods, is seeking a permit from the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to begin allowing tours. If approved, beer enthusiasts will be able to watch Starr Hill’s brewing process starting in mid-summer or early fall.“We hope to incorporate ourselves into the wine-tasting traffic that comes through here all the time,” Thompson said.As part of its upcoming tours, the company is refurbishing a 3,000-square-foot rooftop deck and outdoor walkway where visitors can sip a beer and listen to bands perform. They join Blue Mountain Brewery in their desire to offer tasting of quality beer.

Sideblog fixed!

And now I can resume posting Community Announcements in the right sidebar again.  Thanks to the developer for this plugin; it is one of the most crucial plugins I use here and on my other site.

Send those Crozet Fireworks donations now!

Box 124 Crozet, Virginia 22932Text of the letter requesting funds is below the “fold.”From crozetpark.org:The annual Crozet Volunteer Fireman’s Fourth of July Parade will be held June 30th at 10:00 a.m. !  A summer fest - party will be held after the parade at Claudius Crozet Park with fireworks by the Crozet Community Association that evening.I don’t know that the Crozet Community Association is the sponsor, and frankly, I don’t care.  So long as the fireworks go on (and I can see from from my back porch)Dear Crozet community leaders:I am writing as President of the newly incorporated Downtown Crozet Association, Inc. to ask for your support of a community effort for which our organization has agreed to serve as the coordinating sponsor. After many years of providing a free Fireworks Display as part of their Fourth of July Fireman’s Carnival, our Crozet Volunteer Fire Department has reluctantly decided that they must give up providing this show which has become a tradition for our community.  The fireworks costs have increased significantly and this expense was taking away from the purpose of their carnival – to raise funds to purchase fire fighting equipment! The Downtown Crozet Association is a Virginia non-profit corporation (our IRS 501c3 application is pending) consisting of downtown Crozet merchants, property owners and others who are committed to preserving the identity of Crozet as a distinct community and promoting the small town values that drew us here in the first place! We must raise $4,200 to Save the Fireworks and, although we have placed collection jars at locations around town, your leadership donation is essential to reaching our goal.

Upgraded to Wordpress 2.2

I have upgraded the software that runs this blog.  The “announcements” feature in the sidebar is still broken, but other than that, all should be working well.  Please let me know if you have any problems.

Crozet Zoning Meeting Roundup

The C-Ville has a good summary of last Thursday’s meeting.  The consultants will now cook up some options for how to achieve this vision of a pedestrian-friendly, business-friendly, traffic-friendly downtown Crozet—whether by imposing a historic overlay district or outright alterations of the zoning or some other method known in the worlds of planners and land-use academics.  They will present these options to Crozet on May 24.

Watch this space for Crozet Fireworks information

The fireworks will go on in Crozet this year. A Post Office Box is being set up as is an LLC to receive funds. If you feel the urge to send money before the address is announced, please let me know. If you know anybody who would like to donate in amounts large or small, please feel free to step up to the plate.

What questions do you have for the Crozet candidates?

They wouldn’t actually represent only Crozet, believe it or not; they represent all of the White Hall district, but for those of us in Crozet, it may seem like it.  (PDF is here)Now that there are three candidates in the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors’ race, what questions would you want to ask them?David Wyant, the incumbent, native of the area.Ann Mallek, very involved native of the area.Tom Loach, very involved transplant, not that it matters much.Top issues?…  How different is it than four years ago? Some possible questions - Do you support ASAP’s desire to find an “optimal population” for Albemarle County?Do you support David Slutzky’s Transfer of Development Right plan? What are your thoughts on transit?…  If not, why not?Would you support a local or regional sales tax to help pay for transportation needs? What does your vision for Crozet look like?

And the Third Candidate is …

Tom Loach, local anti-growth advocate.Courtesy of the Crozet Gazette, via Charlottesville Tomorrow:Thomas Loach, a resident of Crozet since 1989, submitted a letter to the editor outlining his experience and asking area residents, particularly those in the designated growth area around Crozet, to sign petitions to put him on the ballot for the November 2007 general election as an independent candidate.
