Meat Truck in Crozet

Sent in by a kind reader:

I thought this would be amusing for RealCrozet. . .about fifteen minutes ago, this guy knocked on my backdoor and offered to sell me meat off his truck!!! He stopped by my neighbors’, too. Apparently one of them bought some meat. . .

I was too stunned to actually get any useful information, but thought you might want some material for the site! Maybe you can ask people if they knew who this guy was!

He stopped by my house on Monday, too, offering a free box of meat if I could “help him out” by buying a box. He had steak and seafood, too. My wife’s gotten us off of red meat, so I declined, but I did take a flyer – they’re Capital Meat. If I’d thought of it, I would have taken a picture of the little pickup with a big freezer in the back.

  1. From an offline commenter –

We have purchased seafood and red meat from Capital Meats (the people coming door to door). The prices were good, the food even better. I would suggest it to anyone with a large family and or a deep freezer. All food is individually freezer wrapped in portions and they guarantee it for freshness for a year.

  2. I work for Capital Meats, so I’m biased about loving our products. However, we offer a great selection of Steak, Seafood, Chicken and Pork. 3. Am I the only one who finds it sketchy when a strange man rings the bell after dark to ask if I “like meat and stuff?” Sorry, but I couldn’t shut the door fast enough. Not sure if this was Capital Meats or someone else, but in any case I was not inclined to pursue the matter further, to say the least.

  4. John,
Food prices vary from state to state and from store to store. You also have to define what quality and cut of the meat you are getting. The USDA grades beef on three levels that are sold to the general public. PRIME (only 2% of all beef) CHOICE (about 30-40% and what is commonly sold in restaurants like Ruby Tuesdays, Applebees, etc.) and SELECT (the rest of what’s sold in stores).

At Capital Meats we sell only USDA Choice or Prime beef and we sell it at wholesale costs. In our steak case, you get 38 steaks and 12 half pound steak burgers or what many places call chopped steaks. When you buy in bulk at our prices, those steaks are about $2 – $4 a steak. Now compare that to what you would pay in a restaurant (about $7 for just a 1/4 lb. burger or $12 for a steak.) As for Sams, and the big box wholesalers, it’s hard to compete, but we do. We usually end up costing right about the same. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Just depends on the area.

All of our steaks have been dry aged to perfection, then flash frozen at the peak of juiciness and tenderness. Their meat has been aged as well, but then it’s put in a truck driven around, delivered to the store, put in a back room for a while, then place on the open air meat counter. Allowed to sit for a few days… you get the picture right?

And since our steaks are flash frozen and vacuum sealed, we have a 12 month guarantee against freezer burn on all of our products and we they are individually wrapped, so you only cook as much as you need or want.

If you would like one of our representatives to show you an in house presentation of our products, just call 1-866-247-0020 to schedule a time, or you can order online and use the 4028-KBN discount code to get 50% off our online prices.

    Thanks, Keith

  5. thanks for the information.
since we live in Crozet and would shop in Cville Sam’s, the state-2-state, store-2-store my question would only contain to one state and store.
i’m not interested in the meat prices as i get all our meat locally cut in the valley.
i’d like to know the price comparison in the fish vs Sam’s prices.

    Thanks.

  6. I don’t know anything about Capital Meats, but we did purchase from such a “truck in the driveway” company when we lived elsewhere and the meat was fine. I would like to know from Keith why they sell that way because I agree with Crozet Mama that it certainly seems suspicious. My husband made our previous purchase – if I had been there, I would have said “No” but in the end it was fine.
John- check the packaging on the meats, including chicken, at Sam’s and Walmart – you’ll find that most, if not all of them will state in small print that they include up to 15% of flavoring solution, so you are paying for water weight and who knows what chemicals.

  7. Because it works, You weren't planing on buying meat yet you did. Also, The convenience of home delivery is a novelty sales marketing tool. VERY low overhead, a truck, gas, These Salesmen work on commission only. no sale = no $$, This is a great idea, I wish I thought of it.

Something to say?
