Favorite Hikes in Crozet?

Question from a reader:

Do you know any good hikes in the Crozet area? We are visiting soon and would like to do a nice hike. Any suggestions?

Any thoughts or suggestions? I’m partial to Humpback Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

  1. Humpback is nice if they go on the BRP. If they go north on Skyline Drive, I would recommend Turk Mountain (MM 94ish) for great Westerly views, or Black Rocks (MM 85ish). Skyline is $15 one-time or $30 annual pass as it is the Shenandoah Natl Park.

  2. Mint Springs has some great hiking trails. They just added a new trail a year ago and installed new guide posts on all of them. Steep in parts, but a variety of lengths and difficulties.

  3. The trails around Sugar Hollow are nice, though river crossings might take a sense of adventure with the recent rains we've had. Up on the Parkway, Dripping Rock is a quick and flat hike to a stunning overlook. It's south of Humpback, look for the small pulloff/parking area on the left, trailhead is on the right.

  4. Good answers. S Fork Moormans at Sugar Hollow is a treasure, a river flowing with natural inspiration .

The reader's question raises a tangible benefit of Crozet, especially if one considers Charlottesville plans to tap Mcintire Park and Ragged Mountain for growth pressures. When the damn at Ragged Mountain is constructed, Charlottesville residents will lose some of their dwindling options for a nearby nature experience..
