4405 Ivy Commons has housed many a thing, including a horseback riding tack shop and a gift shop. These days, instead of bridles or toys, you’ll find meditation cushions and yoga classes at A Place to Breathe Meditation Studio, or Breathe for short.

Externally, the building gives no hint of the spaciousness and calming atmosphere inside. Soft colors and natural light invite you to take a deep breath and maybe enjoy a cup of complimentary tea. A long white and green curtain separates the main studio and lobby space. While a small detail, having a soft curtain instead of a hard wall seems appropriate to a studio in which the separation of mind and body is lessened.

Off to the side, a smaller room – the meditation room – is supplied with meditation cushions, blankets, and a big cozy chair. Who said meditating couldn’t be comfortable? What is nice about this room is that it can be used at any time for free. It is perfect for those who do not have a quiet space in their home or whose schedules cannot accommodate a full class. A funny story the staff at Breathe like to share about the meditation room is the time a Brownie troupe was at the studio for an event. As soon as they walked in the door, all the little girls went straight to the meditation room and made themselves at home. That is how inviting and cozy it is!

So what exactly goes on at Breathe? They offer classes, workshops, teacher training and retreats in meditation, yoga, and other healing/relaxation methods. Charlottesville has many yoga studios, but Breathe is the first meditation studio of the area. Breathe seeks to promote meditation to people of all ages, especially beginners.

Breathe has integrated nicely with the local community. The UVA Mindfulness Center holds many Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses at Breathe and the UVA Lorna Sundberg International Center recently hosted a Nia/Kundalini Yoga event for students and community members.

They have donated to a number of schools, charity fundraisers, and non-profit organizations, and partnered with nursing homes. Reaching out to seniors is an important aspect of Breathe’s mission to make more accessible the healing benefits of meditation and yoga. They have several teachers that travel to nursing homes and retirement facilities to teach.

Breathe’s vision summed up in a few words: “We want meditation rooms to follow the Starbucks model – one on every corner!”

It’s about time. From the press release:

“Beights Corporation proudly announces the addition of Trailside Coffee to the Village Center at Old Trail in Crozet, Virginia. Albemarle native and Crozet-area resident Marcia McGee, proprietor, will be serving fresh brewed coffee and espresso beverages to passersby and residents of Old Trail Village, beginning in January 2009 once construction is complete on the new Village Center.

“I am so excited about this opportunity,” stated McGee at the lease signing, “I have been working hard for months to ensure that I have what I need to do this right. Now we’re ready to go!” McGee began creating her new shop months ago, developing her logo, website, and planned list of offerings in anticipation of her lease-signing this past Friday. She also has secured custom roasting agreements with Williamsburg Coffee & Tea Co. and other, boutique roasters. Of these relationships, McGee said, “I want to provide beans and espresso roasts that are special to our area. As the palate of my customers develops, I can change our custom roasts to best suit their tastes.”

Even though construction on the Old Trail Village Center is a full four weeks ahead of schedule, McGee doesn’t want to keep Crozet-area residents waiting any longer for their espresso fix. Opening in early August, possibly sooner, Trailside Coffee will be operating an espresso and coffee cart in the Old Trail Golf Clubhouse.”

I recently came across this vintage yearbook in a local Va. estate. It measures approx. 9″ by 12″ and 1/2″ thick. It is titled: “The Wheel”, and was the yearbook for the year 1938 for Crozet High School in Crozet Va. All of the images inside are real photos glued in. All of the group student photos are present.

Peachtree Baseball League of Albemarle Inc. is a non-profit organization that solely depends on volunteers to organize the league. We are currently looking for volunteers for the 2007 season.

The following positions are open for the 2007 season –

- Secretary
- VP Tball/Rookie
- Concession stand coordinator Crozet Park
- Historian

The job descriptions are listed below for each position. If you are interested, please contact Cheryl Madison.

Secretary

A)    Act in the absence of the president and vice-president.
B)    Keep accurate minutes of all general membership, board, and special meetings.
C)    Make copies of all minutes available for those who need them. (One copy for the president and one for the Historian)
D)    Maintain records of all league activities.
E)    Responsible for copies of by-laws with all up-to-date changes, which shall be the official by-laws of the league.
F)    Inform all head coaches, in writing, of any new changes or corrections to the bylaws.
G)    Coordinate team picture scheduling and photo disbursement.
H)    Prepare all forms necessary for registration and record keeping for the league.
I)      Keep accurate records of all players in the league, including an adult membership list.

                                                       

                                                            VP  TBALL/ROOKIE DIVISON
A)      Act in the absence of the president
B)      Preside over tryouts and team formation and/or draft in their division.
C)      Act as safety officer to establish procedures that are understood and practiced by players and adult personnel. Provide periodic inspection of playing facilities and equipment. Prepare for emergencies and training in first aid. Investigate accidents and recommend corrective measures.
D)      Prepare rosters for their respective division(s).
E)        Assign late registrations to their respective divisions.
F)        Prepare all-star rosters/ballots for their division.

                                             
                                  CONCESSION STAND COORDINATOR Crozet Park
                                                            (Not a board position)
A)      Purchase supplies for sale in the concession stand, make sure that all purchases are billed to and paid from the league account (No separate checking accounts).
B)      Make recommendations to the board regarding the purchase of equipment and major changes in merchandise and prices.
C)      At the close of each business day, the concession stand coordinator and an approved league member or board member, shall record and initial all cash taken in that day.
D)      Responsible for seeing that stand money is counted and prepared for deposit by the treasurer into the league account no later than 5 working days.
E)      Responsible for seeing that all monies spent/made in the concession stand are properly documented with the treasurer in the ledger system used and approved by the Board of Directors.
                                             

                                        HISTORIAN  (Not a board position)
A)      Responsible for taking photos and documenting events throughout the season and creating a memorabilia scrapbook for each season.
B)      Responsible for securing prizes for the hit-a-thon fundraiser from area businesses and coordinating a hit-a-thon committee
C)      Assist the Secretary with team photos.
D)      Before the beginning of the next season, the Historian is responsible for compiling a notebook containing all pictures, team rosters, standings, newspaper clippings, summary of past years significant happenings. All meeting minutes, audit report with concessions, general funds, account balance(s), and a list of expenditures shall be included in this notebook.

Crozet Resident Carrie Miller is actively arranging publicity and logistics for the Epilepsy Awareness Stroll. The Stroll will take place on November 12 at noon in the UVA Park behind the JAG school near Arlington Blvd. Carrie has a daughter with epilepsy who is four years old and two other special needs children. Carrie‘s remarkable daughter Emmalyn has epilepsy and kidney problems. Such problems mean extended stays at hospitals, missed preschool, difficulty making friends and  the loss of financial resources. Especially the epilepsy has been hard on the whole family.

The stress on Carrie’s family corresponds with most studies on parents of children with seizures. Most studies confirm that parents experience major stress and that the disruption in family life is considered much higher than with other common child hood disorders such as asthma or diabetes. Parents are aware of the possibilities of injuries (in a major study of 5000 persons with epilepsy, 83% of those with one or more seizure during the last year reported some kind of injury), academic problems  and a much lower employment rate than the general population. However children whose parents accept epilepsy and do not overprotect do much better in school and in the workplace. The Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia has a summer camp and family fun days to help foster the independence of children with epilepsy. Carrie Miller and her family are a wonderful example.  Carrie’s motto is “better a broken arm than a broken heart.”

On Monday, October 16th, at 7pm at the Crozet firehouse, Peachtree Baseball League will hold its annual meeting for all interested parties.  We will be discussing the new draft rules as well as bylaws for the league which the Board has been drafting for the last several months. We are also currently looking for volunteers for the 2007 season. The following volunteers are needed:

- President- 2yr term
- VP  Tball/ Rookie
- Concession stand coordinator- Crozet Park (Not a board position)
- Coaches Rep. for Babe Ruth Greenwood
- Historian (Not a board position)
