Every fifth grader at Crozet Elementary School in Albemarle County uses an iPod Touch for classes including math, social studies, and science. Paula White is the Technology Lead teacher and said last year, the class used them for a scavenger hunt.

The government don’t seem capable of building it or funding it, so why keep the citizens’ hopes up?

By the end of the summer, the parking lot for the new Crozet Library will be completed. As for the $9.6 million, 20,000-square-foot library itself, Albemarle officials said last week that, absent sufficient capital funding, its start date was uncertain and the project may have missed the window of a very favorable construction market. ?

“The most recent estimate that we just received has that cost estimate at around $6.8 million or just under $300 a square foot,” Henry said, describing the construction costs in the $9.6 million overall project. “The big drivers in that cost estimate change are site work and concrete.”

But at least we’ll have a parking lot.

1. Grayrock workday this Saturday 8:30-11am. Bring gloves and water, the County will supply the tools and materials. If we have enough people, we can finish this project on Saturday!

2. Monthly Meeting next Thursday, June 9th, Trailside Coffee 6-8pm. We’ll be talking about the July 2nd parade, Crozet Trails Day, the Greenway, and designing hats. Anything else?

3. Crozet trails Day will take place on October 15th and will begin with a 5k trail run (based at Crozet Park) followed by a kids run and some town-wide adventure activities. Want to help plan it? Let me know. We need helpers!

4. June 11th (Saturday)- Trail activities at Preddy Creek Park, the brand new County park. More details on the website (www.crozettrailscrew.org)

5. June 18th (Saturday)- CTC workday at Byrom Park- New County park north of White Hall- perfect for Crozet and White Hall residents. We will be building trails! More info to come.

Following last year’s Spirit Walk, the Field School is again looking for performers:

Field School is hoping to find a few more performers for their 2nd annual Crozet Spirit Walk, to be held October 22 and 23 in downtown Crozet.  The tour begins at Field School with a ride over into town, and then a tour back out to the school, with historical acts all along the way.  Last year’s walk included characters such as Mrs. Claudius Crozet, Lady Astor, Samuel Miller, and young Meriwether Lewis.  If you are interested in participating this year, write Todd Barnett at todd@fieldschoolcv.net.

One tweet said that the meeting last night was contentious. Was it?

The agenda said that they were talking about growth plans in downtown Crozet.

One would think that a quasi-governmental council would at the very least provide minutes or be reported on by local media …

The Crozet Community Advisory Council (CCAC) is an advisory committee that provides assistance to County staff and the Board of Supervisors on civic/community issues related to implementation of the Crozet Master Plan in accordance with established county procedures. Members will communicate with their constituencies to increase understanding of and support for successful implementation of the Master Plan. The membership is broad-based to incorporate a variety of perspectives and ideas and to provide citizens, businesspersons and representatives of active community groups a chance to be engaged and be heard in a constructive and meaningful way.

The last minutes on the Albemarle County site are from August 2009. Bad form and irresponsible.

And yes, I’m frustrated that I have not been able to attend these meetings and I depend on others for their recounting of the meeting.

I’ve fielded a couple of questions over the past few days …

Any idea why they are doing the major tree clear cutting on jarmans rd? Could this be for the widening/sidewalks or dominion clipping to prevent power outages?

And:

Over the past 2 days they have been taking down what appears to be most of the trees on the southern side of Jarmans Gap Road starting from the west end. Is this for the sidewalks? Just curious if you happened to hear anything, sorry if I missed anything about it.

So … what’s going on?

The sidewalk will be on the north side of JGR only. Utility relocations are planned for the south side and must be completed before VDOT bid the construction contract. So the tree removal is most likely associated with the utility relocation activities.

And from Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager of VDOT confirms:

Yes the sidewalk is planned only on the northern side of Rte.691 under the UPC 11129 project. Any tree removal at this time will be for utility relocation.

Update: Walk to School Day is “canceled due to ice and snow on the sidewalks”

This Friday, 19 February is Crozet Elementary’s Monthly Walk to School Day. We probably won’t be walking as we would be walking in the middle of the road for most of the way due to snow.

I asked on Twitter if Brownsville does “Walk to School” days – (and really meant Western and Henley as well) and got an interesting response. Is it true that kids are discouraged/disallowed from walking to school on their own?

In an attempt to better the community and change this perception:

Mint Springs Park is a forgotten county park, Trails are not too long, but has tons of vertical to wear your legs out – much more than Walnut Creek/O Hill! Trails are unfortunately not always well maintained – more riders needed! The trails all essentially start at the lakes and go up to the top of the mountain – there are 4-5 different routes up, all for intermediate riders, a few for advanced only. GREAT terrain, just needs better maintanance.

Over five miles of improved trails now available to the public.

Albemarle County will dedicate an improved and expanded trail system at Mint Springs Park at a ceremony open to the public on Saturday, October 20, at 10:30 am at the park in Crozet.  The trail system, which encompasses over five miles of various types of terrain throughout the park, has been improved and expanded thanks in large part to the hard work of a variety of volunteers including high school and middle school groups, UVA interns, a Crozet Trails crew, and the Charlottesville Albemarle Mountain Biking Club, among others.

New features of the trail system include a large color kiosk that displays all the trails, improved trail marking signs that make it easier to traverse the trails, and full color maps that are available online or in person at the park.

The ceremony will feature Sally Thomas of the County Board of Supervisors; David Wayland, a lifetime Crozet resident whose earliest memories include stories about the park property; and representatives from the County Parks and Recreation Department who will lead guided tours of the trails after the formal ceremony is finished. 

“We are very pleased to be presenting this enhanced trail system to the public as a wonderful amenity in the western Albemarle County community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Pat Mullaney.  “The Mint Springs trails provide citizens with the type of recreational option they ask for most frequently, and they fit very well with our commitment to both environmental stewardship and an active, healthy lifestyle.”

This is going to be a busy weekend in Western Albemarle … Crozet Music Festival, Batesville Festival, Mint Springs dedication …
