“How Does Your Garden Grow” Lecture Series – 22 April 2014

April 22, 2014 @ 19:00 - 21:00

The Crozet Farmers Market in association with the Crozet United Methodist Church (CUMC) will host a gardening lecture series, “How Does Your Garden Grow” to benefit the Food Pantry. Al Minutolo, Manager of the Crozet Market has brought together expert gardeners Peter Hatch, Director of Gardens and Grounds Emeritus, Monticello and Lesley Sewell, Certified Landscape Designer, Arborist and Adjunct Professor of Horticulture, J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College to share their gardening knowledge and experience with you on a variety of topics. The lectures are for new and old gardeners alike, as gardening is a lifetime experience of enjoyment and good health. In recent years, vendor fees from the Farmers Market have been donated to the Food Pantry. In 2013, the Market donated $750.00 to the food pantry and soup program conducted by churches in the Crozet community.

The pantry is a USDA approved facility that serves between 120-170 families, up to 300 people monthly. The pantry also provides food monthly to over 100 area children; the average monthly food distribution is 3-4 tons. Cash donations are important to the food pantry and are a significant multiplier for the purchase of loose food at the local food bank. Although food costs vary, $1.00 will often purchase 8-12 pounds of food. There will be two sessions held in the Fellowship Hall of the CUMC, 1156 Crozet Avenue, 22932. Each session will consist of two lectures:

On Tuesday, 15 April, Peter Hatch will discuss “Fruits, Roots, and Leaves, My Favorite Garden Vegetables” and Al Minutolo will follow with “Gardening 101, Getting Started”.

On Tuesday, 22 April, Lesley Sewell will discuss “Gardening with Deer and Other Wildlife” and Al Minutolo will follow with “The Great American Lawn”. Both sessions will start at 7:00 pm.

Donation is $10.00 per person for each session and all proceeds will be donated to the Food Pantry. Seating is limited, RSVP 434-823-1092 by 10 April if you plan to attend. Come and enjoy the lectures, meet your neighbors and fellow gardeners and support the Food Pantry.
