Food Drive at Western

Via email:

Western is currently running a food drive in support of WAHS Senior, Nicole Muller’s national food drive initiative, Neighbors-4-Neighbors.  Our local food bank aids 30,000 of our community members ( 40% of them children) each month who are in need of food assistance.

Please send in non-perishable food with your student on Monday, January 3 or Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

The food drive will end next week and it would great to show our community the giving spirit that is so much a part of our school.  If every student contributes just one can of food (more would be great), the food bank will receive over 1000 cans of food from the WAHS student body.  That will help tremendously at a time when donations are low, yet the need for the food assistance provided by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank remains high.

Let’s begin the new year right with helping out those neighbors less fortunate than us.

So, Is the New Road to be Named “Peach Street”?

Just wondering.

"Peach" Street?

Update: No.

Thanks to Lee Catlin at Albemarle County for the response, to Tim and Jim for asking.

Lee Catlin of Albemarle County confirmed via email to me this morning that this sign and “Peach Street” name are NOT official for the street. She said county welcomes community input on the possible name. The CCAC will be working with county on submitting name recommendation per their procedures.?So I urge you to vote for your favorite name at😕

Recycle Your Christmas Tree At Crozet Park

Via press release:

Trees will be recycled into free mulch for the public

It’s almost that time of year again! As in the past, the Albemarle County Parks & Recreation Dept will host its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program beginning December 26, 2010 through January 17, 2011. The Christmas Tree Recycling Program collects discarded Christmas trees which are chipped into mulch and then offered to the public at no cost. This program has been in operation since 1988 and recycles over 3400 trees each year; which in turn yields over 144 cubic yards of mulch. Not only does this recycling program provide citizens a place to dispose of a potentially large and cumbersome item, it also reduces the impact on our landfill.

Name That Street (In Crozet)

From the Crozet Community Advisory Council:

Crozet had its Main Street –now called Crozet Avenue– for decades. The name was changed as part of the implementation of the 911 system. Meanwhile, when the Crozet Master Plan called for a street to be built that would parallel Rt. 240 on the south side of the tracks, planners dubbed the dotted line on the maps as “main street” and Crozetians, whose memories found  that name jarring,  called it “new main street.”

When the street’s construction was actually begun, the Crozet Gazette called for citizens to nominate a different name for it.  Three names were proposed by more than one person: Library Street, Barnes Street and Lumber Street. Another half dozen names were suggested by one person, among them Owen, Conley, Ellison, Decamp, Peach, Cider and Carroll. At the Crozet Community Association meeting Nov. 11, the candidate names were discussed and a short list was referred to the county for cross-checking against existing names.

Four names survived as viable: Library, Barnes, Lumber and Decamp. At the Crozet Community Advisory Council meeting Nov. 18, councilors eliminated Decamp on the grounds that explaining its Crozet connection–it was Claudius Crozet’s wife’s maiden name–was too obscure and would not be understood by the public. The CCAC asked RealCrozetVa website to post the possibilities to gather community opinion about which is the most suitable before making a formal recommendation to the county. Which would you prefer?

Jim’s note: I’m happy to help in any way that I can. For a brief history and comments on the names, see this post from October.

Time for a Community Effort to Combat Crozet’s Thefts

It’s time. Dammit. The break-ins have been going on for too long.

mom of three said it best:

and just so you know…I still consider Crozet to be one of the safest, friendliest places in America. I hope we can build community through this problem.

Parkside Village, Waylands Grant, Cory Farm, Old Trail, Western Ridge, St. George Avenue, Jarman’s Gap … there seemingly are no neighborhoods in Crozet that are immune to these break-ins (really, just taking advantage of unlocked cars)

This is unacceptable.

If you are interested in collaborating/coordinating/helping put together neighborhood watches, please fill out this form or send it to your respective homeowners’ associations and neighbors.

Race in Old Trail Today

I just saw this in my inbox:

There will be a charity run through Old Trail on Saturday (today!).  The Freedom 5k will start at 9am from the Old Trail Town Center and run throughout the neighborhood and trails of Old Trail.  The run benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation who provides scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel who are killed or wounded in action.  If anyone is interested in running or walking or supporting the cause, they can register at freedom5k.net or in ACAC on 12/11 starting at 8am.

For those who are just driving through Old Trail on 12/11 morning, please watch for the runners and walkers.  We should be finished by 10am.
