Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton

Stealing Borrowing inspiration from cVillain’s story about Blue Mountain Brewery

Fardowner’s (in the Square where Ombra’s used to be) has a couple of Blue Mountain’s beers, and you can buy them in the six-pack from Greenwood Country Store … where else can you get Blue Mountain locally, outside of their brewery?

  1. In Crozet you can buy it at Great Value and Greenwood Market. In Charlottesville you can get it at Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, Beer Run, Market Street Wine Shop, and Wine Warehouse.

Its always much cheaper to buy 6-packs at the brewey.

  2. Yeah, I’m pretty excited about this opening near us. That said, I’ve got some pretty good suggestions about how they could really improve:

    1) Longer hours!!! By the time we get home and then unwind enough to get in a car and go anywhere they are already closed.

    2) Better seating. It’s a reasonably sized place, but the seating is awkward.

    3) Expanded menu, and make more of it. Twice we’ve gotten there an found out that the kitchen was closed, or the thing on the menu we’d specifically wanted was sold out. (I still haven’t been able to get any of that parsnip soup). Even if the kitchen is “closed” have the ability to provide a smaller “Bar food” menu. Besides, why do they have bratworst pizza but you can’t get bratworst?

    4) Not a necessity, but it’d be very cool if we had some place we could buy beer making supplies around here, and they’ve got all those hop vines…. We’d still go out to drink beer too, we promise! 😉

  3. thanks for the pic referral!

and lonnie, there is a place you can get local brewing supplies here in town. http://www.absbrew.com/ the owners of both BMB and ABSbrew (not affiliated with one another) are pals of mine and they both LOVE beer and brewing!

  4. Well, personally, I prefer Starr Hill…We ate at Blue Mountain the other week and I hate to say it , but found both the food and the beer disappointing. Over-priced and pretty much tasteless. The pizza looked good, maybe the chef was having a bad night, but I will never know as my husband & daughter refuse pointblank to ever return.

Rather than continue in this negative strain, let me say how about we show a little love for Crozet’s own Starr Hill… Anyone else a fan of their Light beer (only available at the brewery?

  5. I consider light beer to be an abomination that should be purged from the earth.

I do generally love Starr Hill’s beer though, and I was very sad to see their restaurant go.

  6. Ah – to clarify – it is called Light, but it is not light in alcohol…check it out… (Odd marketing ploy?)

  7. I just wanted to respond to Lonnie’s suggestions. I am one of the owners of Blue Mountain Brewery and I’m glad you made it out to the brewery and I appriciate your suggestions.

1.) We are changing our hours starting April 1st. We will be open from 4pm to 10pm during the week…and 12pm to 10pm on the weekends.

    2. Sorry you found our seating akward. We had our large oak tables built to give the brewery a kind of european brew hall feel. We have benches, bar stools, folding chairs, leather chairs, and couches….so hopefully people can find something comfortable.

    3. As for our menu…. unfortunatly expanding it is just something we cant do at the moment. Our vision of the brewery was to be more in the lines of the winerys in the area. A place people could come in to sample the beers, sit on the porch and enjoy the view, maybe go on a tour of the brewery, and get some light food. What happens is that when people think of a brewery the first thing they think of is a full fledge restaurant…which we understand…but we just are not able to do at the moment. We are flattered that people enjoy of food so much and we will continue to offer a light menu and we hope to expand our kitchen in the future.

Thanks to much for coming out to the brewery and we hope to see you out there again. We have some great beers on tap and coming on tap soon. Our Belgian triple will be released next week. We will have our wheat beer back on tap and in bottles in a few weeks…along with the very popular Imperial Porter.
