Jarman’s Gap Road Closing 15 August

If you haven’t driven (or ridden your bike or walked) down Jarman’s Gap in the past few days you might have missed the signs that say:

“Road Closed from Orchard Road to Blue Ridge Road from August 15 to October 15.”

Presumably, they’ll be closing Jarman’s Gap in sections …

Goodie. Just in time for the start of school (which in Albemarle County is August 24) …

Don’t forget you can track the progress on VDOT’s page.
As of right now, they are 7% complete. Aiming for a 21 September 2012 completion date. Anyone know of a service online where we could take over-under bets and donate the proceeds to charity?
(they started this project in 1998.)

Thanks to @HanchettJim for forwarding me VDOT’s press release:

JARMANS GAP ROAD TO CLOSE FOR CONSTRUCTION WORK
Installation of box culvert near Blue Ridge Ave. begins August 15

CULPEPER — Beginning August 15, construction work will close Route 691 (Jarmans Gap Road) in Crozet between Route 1209 (Haden Lane) and Route 1201 (Blue Ridge Avenue).

The closure, expected to last 45-60 days, will allow for reconstruction of a box culvert in Powells Creek. The creek will be temporarily diverted while the existing box culvert is removed and the new pre-cast concrete box culvert is installed.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured from Jarmans Gap Road south on Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) to Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) to Old Trail Drive and back to Jarmans Gap Road. School buses will use the same route when the new school year begins on August 24.

The $3.9 million contract for Jarmans Gap Road was awarded to General Excavation Inc. of Warrenton in February, and construction began in May. The project is designed to improve safety for motorists, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians, along a 0.9-mile stretch of the road extending west from its intersection with Route 240 (Crozet Avenue). Once completed, Route 691 will have 12-foot wide travel lanes, a four-foot wide bicycle lane on each side of the road, curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway and sidewalk on the northern side of Route 691.

The project is slated for completion by Sept. 21, 2012.

More information about the project can be found on VDOT’s web site.

  1. Can’t wait to see how long it’s going to take to turn left onto 250 from Old Trail Drive in the mornings. Or right, for that matter. I’m buying a hot-air ballon.

    1. Depending on where you live and center crozet.    Looks like only between orchid and blue ridge rd will road be closed.  you can still take orchid or lanetown to Railroad Ave.   Its much shorter than taking OT to 250+240 to crozet center.    Just trying to spread the traffic pain among neighborhoods 🙂

  2. Wasn’t this supposed to be done while school was out of session, not in session?  This is going to create a traffic nightmare going through Old Trail.  It already is congested enough while school is in session.

  3. @Jim @Ashley:   This is the DOT…All DOT’s are predictably off schedule-  anyone that expects them to be their word, hasn’t been driving long enough.  Best plan when working with a DOT, is consider the worst-case scenario, plan for it, and then add another worst-case on top of that.

@Jim:  Is it still legal to do over/under’s – even if it’s for charity???  If there’s a loophole in the ban on online gambling, I will administer the site!  Not a gambler myself, but this sounds like a win/win for our community.

Something to say?
