Race in Old Trail Today

I just saw this in my inbox:

There will be a charity run through Old Trail on Saturday (today!).  The Freedom 5k will start at 9am from the Old Trail Town Center and run throughout the neighborhood and trails of Old Trail.  The run benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation who provides scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel who are killed or wounded in action.  If anyone is interested in running or walking or supporting the cause, they can register at freedom5k.net or in ACAC on 12/11 starting at 8am.

For those who are just driving through Old Trail on 12/11 morning, please watch for the runners and walkers.  We should be finished by 10am.

Jarman’s Gap Road Set to be Improved

And it might happen in my kids’ lifetimes.

A $13.5 million project to widen a stretch of Jarman’s Gap Road in Crozet will be advertised for construction in January 2011. The right of way phase for this project first began in 1998.

“Given the amount of development that has taken place, the improvements are important for providing adequate access,” said chief planner David Benish in an interview. The project will also add sidewalks and a bike lane, which will make downtown Crozet more accessible.

Rash of Break-ins in Crozet

From a reader:

I thought you may want to drop a line in your blog that we had some vehicle break-ins in the Grayrock area the night of 12/1. Mostly electronics (cell phones/iPods) were stolen. Folks should make sure to lock their car doors (mine were not.)

Just a reminder to lock your doors and look out for your neighbors. I don’t live in Grayrock, and our neighborhood was visited by some vehicle break-ins a few weeks ago. I called the police, they dusted for prints, etc. Here’s hoping they get caught soon.

Update 3 December 2010:

Someone emailed me and said that they are offering a $500 reward for information/tip/whatever that leads to the discovery & conviction of the person(s) responsible for these thefts. I’ve never offered a reward, but if anyone’s caught and you can prove it was you who caused the catching, let me know.

Also, I’ve updated the headline from “Break-ins in Grayrock” to “Rash of Break-ins in Crozet”

Will The Crozet Library Be Built Sooner?

Brandon Shulleeta fills us in in today’s Daily Progress.

No target date raises issue of fundraising:

Finalizing project plans, and readying the library for contract bids, increases the likelihood of the county receiving donations and grants, Supervisor Duane Snow noted, adding that there are people interested in donating.

“But they can’t donate to something when they don’t know what is, what all is involved and whether or not it’s just a pipe dream,” Snow said.

A fundraising committee had set a goal of raising about $1.6 million, Halliday said, and though the committee has collected about a tenth of that money, the fundraising campaign has become stagnate because the committee has not been able to tell potential donors when the library might be built or precisely what it would look like.

As does lack of confidence or trust in our government to actually get something done.

How Many Residents in Old Trail Walk to School?

I’m just curious. With so many families and rooftops in Old Trail, and it being less than a 30 minute walk, how many kids in Old Trail walk to school?

The above is a question that I am asked frequently when I am working with buyer clients who are considering buying homes in Old Trail.

This isn’t a slam on Old Trail, but a question to which I’d love an answer.

I would love to see a story about the restrictions that Western Albemarle, Brownsville and Henley place on walking to school … from someone who has the time to investigate such things. I know whom to talk to and have the story outline, but don’t have the time.

More kids should walk to school.

See the map? It’s not that far! Is a mile and a half really too far for an able-bodied kid (or parent!) to walk? Sure there aren’t sidewalks, but I don’t think anyone would be harmed by walking on the path that has started to be worn into the grass.

Every day that I drive through Old Trail, I see several kids waiting at the Old Trail Town Center for the bus.

As of September of last year, there were 129 kids who attended Brownsville Elementary that lived less than two miles to school. I’d bet quite a few of these are in the Old Trail neighborhood.

And here’s the thing – I know that the schools have prohibitions against kids walking to school (schools, jump in and correct me if I’m wrong) but if parents stepped up and advocated for their kids’ rights and their rights as parents to allow their kids to walk to school, the schools would have to listen.

Have a look at some the the population/density/walkability data yourself.

I’d be interested in seeing more “walking the walk” – it’s one thing to walk around one’s neighborhood; it’s another to exercise that option beyond. Continue reading “How Many Residents in Old Trail Walk to School?”
