Last week, Albemarle sent out this email:

Albemarle County Cybersecurity Incident
“Media Partners:   “Albemarle County experienced a cyber incident earlier this week. While the response is ongoing and active, I would like to share with you an update:

Albemarle County is actively responding to a cybersecurity incident that has impacted certain systems within our network. As soon as our internal IT team identified the issue, we took immediate steps to contain it and minimize any disruption. We have engaged outside cybersecurity experts to guide our response and remediation efforts, and we have alerted state and federal law enforcement, as is our policy.

Public safety services remain in operation. This includes our 911 Emergency Communications Center and other critical services.

Internet access at our County buildings remains offline as we continue to secure our systems and assess the impact of the incident. As a result, some services may be temporarily unavailable. We understand how disruptive this is for both our employees and the public, and we are working urgently to restore full functionality as safely and quickly as possible.

The trust that our Albemarle County community places in us is a top priority. We will share additional information as soon as it becomes available.

At this time, there are no further details to provide, but we remain committed to transparency as we learn more.

As always, I appreciate all you do to keep our community informed.”

I still cannot use Albemarle County GIS, something I tend to use every day. So I asked for an update.

Albemarle County continues its efforts in responding to the cybersecurity incident that impacted our network systems last week. Our internal IT team and outside cybersecurity experts have been working carefully to bring systems back online safely and securely.

At this time, internet access at the County office has been restored. That said, we are still troubleshooting system challenges, a process that will continue through the next several weeks. This includes some public-facing resources, including GIS Web. We understand how disruptive this is for both our employees and the public, and we are working urgently to restore full functionality as safely and quickly as possible

The trust that our Albemarle County community places in us is a top priority. We will share additional information as soon as it becomes available.

There’s always a cyberattack, according to Google News.

Something to say?

  1. The BOS feels that there is no need to respond to any questions regarding this or on keeping our highly sensitive data safe. They will not make their chosen Vender
do anything. If they were the least bit competent things would be fixed already especially since it is tax season. I suggest getting the Albemarle County board of Realtors involved. The responses I have gotten are pathetic at best and show the total incompetence of the BOS… Yet they all want the job.
