What Should the Speed Limit be on Old Trail Drive (and Jarman’s Gap)

A letter to the editor entitled Old Trail Speed Limit Unreasonable in the Crozet Gazette prompted a good conversation on Twitter that I’m moving to the blog because I think it (and hope it) wants wider conversation.

Can the logic applied to the (absurdly, stupidly low) speed limit on the Charlottesville Bypass be applied here?

Megan Davis wrote in the Daily Progress in April:

Traffic data collected as part of the engineering study conducted by Maryland-based Rummel, Klepper & Kahl showed the 85th percentile speeds at four points in the 35-mph zone of the bypass is between 46 and 50 mph.
The 85th percentile speed, which represents the speed at or below which 85 percent of drivers are traveling in free-flowing traffic, is often used to determine speed limits, according to the study.

“Repeated research on speed limits consistently shows that the most appropriate, safe and enforceable speed limit will be within 5 mph of the 85th percentile speed,” the study reads.

Still, special conditions, such as adjacent residential neighborhoods, school zones and parks, should also be considered, the study said.
The study concluded that such special conditions make the 35-mph zone of the bypass appropriate.

What should the speed limit be on that stretch of Old Trail Drive?

When will they put in sidewalks and the bike lanes that I seem to recall being promised a long time ago?

Questions about the Crozet Pool Dome Sounds

From a conversation on the RealCrozetVA Facebook page

I am really happy that I live near the Crozet pool dome. However, if I lived next to the dome, I would likely be unable to sleep with my windows open due to the noise.

I can see the argument being made that the noise interferes with nearby homeowners’ ability to quietly enjoy their homes.

On the day of the dome’s installation late last month, I didn’t notice the sound, but this morning when riding to and back home from Crozet Elementary, the sound was startling. I would have recorded the sound, but a train was going by. 🙂

One of the differences apparently is that the noise of the fans or generator (or both) is never-ending.

One anticipates baseball games, soccer matches, swimming meets, the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival (which is the weekend of 13/14 October) … But this is something that was not anticipated nor could it have been anticipated by neighbors.

Good neighbors work together on this such of thing, so I don’t have any question that the sound can be addressed, it’s just a matter of how and when.

Art Box & Creative Framing Opening Soon

I stopped in and met the fine folks at the Art Box & Creative Framing (right across from the soon-to-be-former Crozet Library) the other day.

1 – They have a store in Charlottesville & Lynchburg

2 – They’re doing everything they can to be open by the Crozet Arts & Crafts Festival

3 – The floors are beautiful.

4 – It’s great to see that space filled with a great business

5 – Art Box & Creative Framing, the Crozet Bead store, Crozet Arts … Crozet’s crafty.

5b. They’re all quite easy to walk or ride bikes to if you live near or in Downtown Crozet.

* Hopefully I’ll get around to emailing them the few questions I have …

Signs, Politics, Pictures and Crozet

Be careful – I’m going to talk about national politics here for a second. If you don’t like such topics, read about some of the upcoming Crozet events.

I received this email this morning:

I was enjoying the pictures of Crozet on your RealCrozet blog but was disappointed to see the picture of the O’Bama (sic) sign included. Why no Romney signs, there are more of them by my account. If you are going to start with the political stuff I won’t be visiting your site again, or a least be impartial.

Crozet Community Calendar

There’s lots happening in Crozet, from concerts to vineyard happenings to events at Tabor Church to dome-putting-up at Crozet Park to Crozet Community Association and Crozet Community Advisory Council meetings. Years ago (I can’t even find a link) on RealCrozetVA I tried to assemble a Crozet community calendar; I’m trying again.

May I present – the Crozet Community Calendar. I’m going to figure out a way to embed it over there in the sidebar, but for now, I’ll ask you to notice it, remember it, and email me (and your friends) if you have an event you want readers of RealCrozetVA to know about.

To recap:

Crozet Community Calendar is here

– email me if you’d like to publicize an event

– I’m mentioning it on Twitter and Facebook and Google Plus.

– For now, I’m not sure yet how I’m going to deal with announcements going forward, whether I’ll keep doing separate posts for events, a one-line post + addition to the Crozet calendar or just add it to the calendar …

– I think it’d be cool to post when neighborhood HOA meetings are …
