Help out the Crozet Community – volunteer for the CCAC

Albemarle County are looking for applicants for the Crozet Community Advisory Council. Selfishly, I would love for a representative of the CCAC to write a story on RealCrozetVA after the meetings to keep readers updated on the direction that Crozet may go.

For better or worse, our daily lives are significantly impacted by the conclusions reached and decisions made in mundane, monotonous often boring yet crucially important meetings.

Are you interested in being an active and engaged part in critical issues that will help shape Crozet’s future? If so, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors is strongly encouraging you to apply for one of several open positions on the Crozet Community Advisory Council (CCAC).

The CCAC was created by the Board two years ago as an advisory committee to assist County staff and the Board of Supervisors with civic/community issues related to implementation of the Crozet Master Plan. The membership is broad-based to incorporate a variety of perspectives and ideas and to provide citizens, businesspersons and representatives of active community groups a chance to be engaged and be heard in a constructive and meaningful way.

The 15-member group meets monthly and is active in partnering with the County on a variety of critical projects including the streetscape project, the Crozet Library, the Western Park master plan, and the downtown zoning project. Members serve a two-year term and are eligible for reappointment for a total of two terms.

The CCAC needs the continued energy and commitment of Crozet residents to continue the good work started in the group’s first two years and to keep momentum going on major infrastructure projects underway like the downtown revitalization and the library. Anyone interested in learning more about the Council or in getting an application can contact the County Community Relations Office at (434)296-5841 or can visit the Albemarle County website.

Crozet is moving forward … a gym, a new Harris Teeter under construction across the street, the Old Trail Towncenter on its way … the Waynesboro Town Center fifteen minutes to the west …

Fardowners in the Square

Any restaurant that has CrayAngles is going to win my vote to return.

Open since 17 December of 2007, Fardowner’s is chugging along, prepping for their forthcoming spring menu.

From the HooK in January:

The name refers to the name of the Irish immigrants who built Claudius Crozet’s four tunnels through the Blue Ridge Mountains in the decade before the Civil War, an engineering feat whose centerpiece, the Blue Ridge Tunnel through Afton, still gets accolades.

According to Fardowners’ owner, Charlottesville native W.C. Winkler, the name is derived from “far down south in Ireland,” though some think it’s derived from “far down under the mountain.” Either way, it makes for a nifty name! And that’s just what Winkler had in mind.

Dinner for a family of four for under eighty bucks (with drinks, including tip) = not bad in this day and age. The train theme carries through to the paper my daughter was given to occupy her time – with a train to color, naturally.

Outstanding fresh bread with three home-made sauces – raspberry, horseradish mustard and honey mustard – all of which were very tasty. Appetizer were corn fritters – five fried fritters that looked quite a bit like hush puppies – having five to split amongst the four of us provided an opportunity for negotiating.

The house salads were fresh and good, as were the dressings. The meals came out, well-timed in their arrival.

The kids’ mac and cheese was quite good (and good the next day as well) and resembled a cheese soup with noodles. Around the rest of the white-clothed table were pork chops with asparagus and mashed potatoes, grilled meatloaf with the same sides and a monstrous chicken pot pie with a crust of mashed potatoes – all of which did nothing but encourage us to return.

Staff were friendly and helpful and the owner came over to inquire if “everything was alright,” and the selection of wines, beers was impressive as were the choices of local wines and beers – that we have two breweries so close is quite nice.

As an aside, having Jerry Garcia Band as background music was an added bonus.

Not too crowded nor overwhelmingly priced with good atmosphere – we’ll be back.

Crozet area Shootings

A quick summary of some of the discussions surrounding the Crozet shootings.

Cvillenews
The Hook
Daily Progress (sporting a new website, no less!)

CNN, FoxNews and the AP have converage as well.

It’s a bit eerie today; schools are closed, but kids are playing outside. Soccer practice was canceled, but not everybody knew, or expected to not have practice. Thankfully, schools are open tomorrow.

Anybody have any thoughts on today’s events?

Old Trail groundbreaking

This “reporter” missed the groundbreaking, but these are a few of the related stories from the media –

The Daily Progress

Old Trail – set against a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Crozet – will feature a “town center” in the midst of residential development. The center will include 85,000 square feet of commercial and office space, including a coffee shop, three restaurants and fitness center along with individual offices. The Old Trail community has about 135 occupied homes, but the large development could have up to 2,600 townhouses, homes and apartments in the next 10 to 15 years. Developers said in an interview they are hoping to build about 100 units per year.

Matt from Blue Mountain Brewery responds to comments

Pulled from a comment

“I just wanted to respond to Lonnie’s suggestions. I am one of the owners of Blue Mountain Brewery and I’m glad you made it out to the brewery and I appreciate your suggestions.

1.) We are changing our hours starting April 1st. We will be open from 4pm to 10pm during the week…and 12pm to 10pm on the weekends.

2. Sorry you found our seating akward. We had our large oak tables built to give the brewery a kind of european brew hall feel. We have benches, bar stools, folding chairs, leather chairs, and couches….so hopefully people can find something comfortable.

3. As for our menu…. unfortunately expanding it is just something we can’t do at the moment. Our vision of the brewery was to be more in the lines of the wineries in the area. A place people could come in to sample the beers, sit on the porch and enjoy the view, maybe go on a tour of the brewery, and get some light food. What happens is that when people think of a brewery the first thing they think of is a full fledge restaurant … which we understand … but we just are not able to do at the moment. We are flattered that people enjoy our food so much and we will continue to offer a light menu and we hope to expand our kitchen in the future.

Thanks so much for coming out to the brewery and we hope to see you out there again. We have some great beers on tap and coming on tap soon. Our Belgian triple will be released next week. We will have our wheat beer back on tap and in bottles in a few weeks … along with the very popular Imperial Porter.
