9th Annual Crozet Trails Crew 5K – 6 October 2018

The 9th annual Crozet Trails Crew 5K Trail Race and Kids 400-meter Fun Run is only one month away! Come out on Saturday, October 6 to run, walk, or jog through woods, grassy fields, along streams, and over bridges (more info below).

Many are already working behind the scenes planning the race route, painting bridges, collecting prizes, etc.

Please support our primary fundraiser of the year by joining our

  • Workday on Saturday, Sept. 29 to prepare the trail for the race. Meet at 9 am at the trail entrance off Park Ridge Drive. Drive down Park Ridge through Western Ridge into Foothill Crossing, and look for the trail entrance on the left.
  • Help at the race on 10/6 by setting up, staffing registration, giving out prizes, and cleaning up after the race. Sign up to volunteer here, and thank you!
  • Register to run/jog/walk the race here.
    • The Kids Fun Run is at 8 am, with the adult race beginning at 8:30 and award ceremony at 9:30 with lots of prizes, including bridge naming rights to the male and female first place finishers! Registration and packet pick up will be Friday evening 10/5 from 6 to 8 pm in front of Crozet Library, as well as Saturday morning 7-8 am at Crozet Park. Fee is $20 online in advance or $25 in person. Registration includes a race tee shirt plus admission to the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival immediately following.
  • The Crozet Trails Crew helps our parent non-profit, the Crozet Park, by staffing the wine and beer tent at the Arts for and Crafts Festival. Sign up for a shift as bartender here.

Help get the word out by posting the attached flyer at your workplace, church, or school.

And that’s not all! A team from Albemarle County Parks & Recreation has begun to make major improvements to the muddy and rutted trail just outside the dog park at Crozet Park. We are looking forward to a smoother, drier trail in that section. Thanks to all who helped them!

Our monthly meeting has a NEW date (third Thursday) and location this month! It will be Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6:30 – 8 pm at Crozet Pizza. Hope to see you there for final race planning!

Crozet’s Water Pump Station Coming Online Today

Currently, there are two sets of water system improvements underway: (1) three ongoing projects at the Crozet Water Treatment Plant (WTP), and (2) three interrelated projects at the Beaver Creek Dam. Upgrades to the WTP on Rt. 240, first described in detail here in February, have progressed according to schedule. Those upgrades include the installation of granular activated carbon filters for cleaner water, now operational, at a cost of $3.4 million, and the construction of a new finished water pump station, now 90 percent complete and expected to be online by September, at a cost of $2.6 million.

Jefferson Madison Library – 5 Year Plan Survey

The Jefferson Madison Regional Library (JMRL) has always relied on the support of community partner organizations such as yours to help bring services to all of the citizens of Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.

JMRL is undergoing a year-long process to develop a strategic plan to guide the library through 2024, and is seeking community feedback in this process. Outreach to library users and non-users alike is bringing in a world of suggestions for improvement to services.

The Jefferson Madison Regional Library is seeking community feedback to help guide the future of library services in the area. Please take a moment to fill out a brief survey on  jmrl.org/future. Thank you for your support.

Co-Working in Crozet?

I’ve heard people mention on occasion a desire for co-working space in Crozet.  As an entrepreneur who has spent most of the last 13 years working from home, I get that.  For a variety of reasons, I’m considering getting a nice office space in or around Old Trail in 2019.  This office space is likely to be bigger than I need at first, and so I’m wondering how serious people are about wanting co-working in Crozet?

To be clear, my thought is not to start a true co-working space in the traditional sense.  My assumption is that Crozet is not big enough yet to support that, but you can try to prove me wrong.  Instead, I’m just thinking it would be nice to have an open space office with a little bit of private spaces built in and nice views of the mountains.  My business could use it, but there’s not many of us here at the moment and so I would consider subleasing desks to others until my business grows more.

For anyone who’s interested, consider this a survey.  Contact me at [email protected] and answer these questions:

1) How often would you use a co working space in Crozet?
2) What would you use it for?  Do you need a closed room or prefer an open space area?  Or what combination of both?
3) What would you expect to pay for that?

You can assume this place would not exist until middle of 2019, so please project your answers to what your future self truly needs and would pay for.

At this point, this is just an idea, there are no plans drawn up or commitments made, but this is a useful exercise since the answers to a survey like this could affect paths my company takes in the coming months.

2nd Annual Crozet Volunteer Fire Department Golf Classic

After our first ever Crozet Volunteer Fire Department Golf Classic, an event that exceeded our expectations, we are back to bring you another exciting day of community fun at the base of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Last year, with your help, we were able to raise $29,028 and contribute $20,407 towards a 2018 Polaris Ranger 900XP to better serve our community.

On Thursday, September 20, 2018, we will be hosting the second annual Crozet Volunteer Fire Department Golf Classic at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Virginia. To ensure the tournament goes off without missing a stroke, it is vital that we have the support of those we protect day in and day out. With that said, we are actively planning 2018’s tournament and are looking to grow and further increase our community footprint with help from sponsors like you.

~260 Homes Coming to Downtown Crozet

Update:

I suspect this is not the final plan, and some aspects are open to change/negotiation, but this gives a sense as to what the development is going to be. If you want to voice your opinion, I suspect the best routes would be to our Board of Supervisors and the Albemarle County Planning Commission.

Stanley Martin Homes has sent a letter to neighbors about an informal, private meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday regarding the Pleasant Green project, planned for an area north of Powells Creek. Collins Engineering held a pre-application meeting with the county in June, but no formal applications have been submitted with the county.

Mike Marshall, who owns some of the properties that are being sold for the development, including the circa-1800s house, said that he does not know what’s going to happen to it at this point. He said he has salvage rights as part of the sale, and he has talked to some companies that dismantle old houses for building materials.

“I don’t have any arrangements with any salvage companies; the house still has tenants in it and they haven’t found places to move yet, so they’re in there for the time being,” said Marshall, who is also the editor and publisher of the Crozet Gazette. “Presumably, they’ll move out sometime over the fall and then we’ll be able to find out what is actually salvageable from the building.”

Help the Crozet Trails

Here comes the sun–at last (and with a vengeance)! We will have a workday this Saturday, Aug. 11 at 9 am to prune and trim the Rowcross Trail in Old Trail (directions below). We have another workday planned for Saturday, Aug. 25, meeting location TBD. Always be sure to bring water and wear sturdy shoes; tools are optional. A hat and bug repellent are also recommended!

We can’t believe fall is just around the corner. SAVE THE DATE for the 9th annual Crozet Trails Crew 5K trail race with Kids’ Run at 8 am on Saturday, October 6, the morning of the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival. We will need volunteers for Friday evening registration on 10/5, as well as Saturday morning from 7:30 to 9:30 amfor registration, setup, prize distribution, etc. Of course we also need runners/walkers/joggers–spread the word! This is the Trails Crew’s primary fundraiser of the year, so it’s a fun and healthy way to show your support. Registration link and volunteer signup genius will be posted next month.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 23, 6:30 pm at Mi Rancho in the Old Trail Town Center. Beginning in September, we will move the meeting from the 4th to the third Thursday of each month, which will be Sept. 20.

Directions to 8/11 workday:

When entering Old Trail from Jarman’s Gap Road, continue on Old Trail Drive around all 3 roundabouts (past the Town Center on the left). Turn left on Glen Valley Drive (= the last road before Rt 250). Take a quick right on Claremont Lane and then a left onto Rowcross Street. Follow around the curve and park on the right side.

OR

If coming from Rt 250 on Old Trail Drive, take your first right onto Glen Valley Drive.  Take a right on Claremont Lane, and then left onto Rowcross Street. Follow around the curve and park on the right side.

The Crozet Trails Crew welcomes volunteers of all activity levels, ages, and desired level of involvement. Workday volunteers must be over 18 years of age or else accompanied by their responsible adult. Please use your best judgment, or ask the workday leader, as to whether it’s an appropriate workday for dogs and small children. When joining the Crew for a workday, each participant is responsible for their own personal safety, the safety and behavior of their pets and children, and the choices they make while working as a team. Each volunteer assumes sole responsibility for any personal tools or equipment they bring, including their personal vehicles, power tools, hand tools, hiking gear, and any other personal gear that you bring.

Crozet Indoor Sports Facility

My quick thought: Crozet needs this. “Where” is going to be an interesting challenge.

Last Saturday, July 28, we officially launched the website for Crozet Sports and shared it with the western Albemarle community through various social media sites.  The vision and journey for Crozet Sports, however, began late last year. Our family moved to Crozet in July of 2015 and immediately joined the athletic community in both baseball and soccer.  As our kids got older, their athletic interests expanded. As we drove to our increasing number of sporting events, we routinely discussed how amazing it would be to have more field space and athletic events right here in Crozet.  That conversation transitioned to include the need for indoor options that could be utilized year-round and before we knew it Crozet Sports was born!

In case you haven’t heard yet, Crozet Sports is a community-oriented sports organization that will serve the growing athletic and health needs of the western Albemarle community.  Crozet Sports will feature an indoor sports training facility and will offer an array of athletic opportunities for the youth athlete and active adult.

Early in this journey we connected with leaders of local youth sports organizations.  With their feedback as well as valuable input from our real estate development team we have brought our vision to life!

The Indoor Sports Facility will feature the following

  • Indoor turf fields designed for lacrosse, soccer, football and field hockey
  • Multi-purpose hard courts to be used for basketball and volleyball
  • Indoor cages, pitching tunnels, and training areas for baseball and softball
  • State-of-the-art locker rooms including oversized lockers for equipment
  • Student-athlete classrooms
  • Sports performance training and functional fitness areas
  • Mezzanine level including a sports lounge and viewing gallery for families, fans, and community events
  • ……and much more!!

We will strive to provide the youth of our community with the resources they need to develop in the sports they love and the opportunity to play year-round.  Our focus is also on growing the character of each of our youth athletes as they learn the value of hard work, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and integrity through training and playing sports.

We are also excited to share that starting late fall, the Crozet Sports Academy will begin offering sports camps and clinics in Crozet!  Offerings will include instructional youth clinics for baseball, softball, soccer, football, and a number of other sports based on community interest.  Registration for these clinics will be announced both on our website http://crozetsports.com/ and through our social media pages.

Since announcing our launch, we have heard from many in our community who have embraced our vision.  There are so many individuals and families who are as excited about this facility as we are and we want to hear from you!  At this time Crozet Sports is conducting an interest survey to gain feedback from residents in Albemarle County. The site location of the indoor facility is to be determined but will be located in western Albemarle.  We strongly encourage everyone who is interested in this facility to complete the survey. Community feedback is important to the design process and to ensure that the facility meets the athletic needs of our community.
