What’s Going on At Crozet Park?

I ride through Crozet Park all the time and there is a lot happening! So much so that I asked Kim Guenther with the Park to give us an update. She was gracious to quickly email me something and it’s taken me a couple weeks to get around to posting; I’m sorry.

What’s Happening at the Park

If you’ve been by Crozet Park lately, you’ve no doubt noticed the mountains of dirt sitting south of the upper playground. Some have guessed this might be a new BMX dirt bike course or, an obstacle for a Tough Mudder event. Or, just for fun, the Park Board decided to dig up the old pool near the upper playground that was shut down and covered over when the new pool was built in 1996.  But no, none of these things are true. Instead, we are redesigning and improving the Park’s parking.  

The project kicked off in early July and we’ve pulled together key points into an FAQ. So, if you’re wondering what the heck is going on at your community park, read on…

  1. Why are we renovating and expanding Park parking?

Surveys of Park users have helped make clear how current parking is not adequate.

Anyone who has been to the Park, especially in the spring and summer, can attest to the many challenges of parking.  Park usage continues to increase especially as new amenities – dog park and perimeter trail — are added, resulting in parking that is less than adequate. To put this in context, traffic volume coming into the community-owned 22-acre Crozet Park is second only to the County-owned Darden Towe Park, a 113-acre park in Charlottesville.

Interested in the Crozet Cycling Club?

You may have seen us on the road, and hopefully you saw the great story in last month’s Crozet Gazette.

If you’re interested in riding with the Crozet Cycling Club (we have 3 segments of the club now!), come out to Pro Re Nata this Friday, 24 June between 7 and 9. (the facebook event is here) We’re calling this a non-spandex social.  Already ride? Cool. Thinking about starting to ride? Come on down.

If you’re out on local scenic roads at the crack of day, you’re likely to see a posse of Crozet cyclists trailing slipstreams, winding like wind down the roads.

“This area’s hard to beat. It’s gorgeous. We stop to take pictures,” said Duncan. “We take time to appreciate where we are. Morning commuters know us because of our headlight power. We stick together as a group. We’re extremely conscientious about safety and sharing the road. We live here and we don’t want to piss off our neighbors.

At the moment, we have 3 groups of riders –

  • Wednesday morning at 6am – and usually every other morning as well)
  • The 9:30 Club  – who meet Fridays at 7:15 at Mudhouse during the summer
  • The Easy Riders – meet at Crozet Mudhouse on Mondays and Thursdays. ** see the end of this post for more information on the Easy Riders

* one request – if you do request to be a member of one of the google groups, please also email me and let me know a little about who you are and how long you’ve been riding; the google groups are private groups, and we like to know with whom we’re communicating (our email threads tend to be comical from time to time, too).

I’m always happy to answer questions, or talk about the different groups, and which one may be the best fit for you. Call/email/text me anytime and 434-242-7140.

We are now discussing holding clinics for those of us – beginners and not-so-beginners – to learn to be better skilled and safer riders. I truly love and am humbled by the growth and evolution of this group.

There Are Bears in Crozet

There are bears in Crozet … they are part of the charm of living here (we are at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive/Shenandoah National Park, after all)

… and seemingly more bears are making their presence known now that it’s Bear Awareness Week (who knew?)

What Are Crozet’s Competitive Advantages?

This morning I noted on the RealCrozetVA Facebook:

Crozet needs employers so that not everybody needs to go to Charlottesville in the mornings.

Another day, another wreck on 64…

“Accident: EB on I-64 at MM115 in Albemarle Co. 1 travel lane closed. Delay 1 mi.8:24AM”

And this comment resonated with me:
Besides, wine, beer, cider, and new houses with amazing vistas, what are Crozet’s competitive advantages?

My quick list:

– Crozet is a community that cares
– Crozet have pretty good schools
– We are in a great location close to Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, parks, Charlottesville.
– We have (mostly) involved community members
– There is good enough walk and bikeability for those who choose to do so.
– We have a well-educated population (that is growing)
– Crozet has clean air.

A Nice Thing about Life in Crozet – Soup & Cupcakes

A funny thing happened a little while ago – soup started showing up on the front porch of a little house on Jarmans Gap. Turns out that soup is by the fine folks at L’Etoile.

On a schedule I’ve not yet tried to figure out, they put soup in a green cooler on their porch , $10/quart, and then – on your honor – you pay and take home a delicious quart of soup.  I’ve had the soup; it’s outstanding.

And then … cupcakes appeared next door!

 

(I’d have gotten a thing of soup, but I was on my way back from meeting clients, and my bicycle rack had only so much room!)

CCAC Meeting Recap – 17 February 2016

I’m going to let the tweets about tonight’s Crozet Community Advisory Council meeting speak for themselves.

Short summary:

  • There are at least 3 openings on the CCAC; apply here, and/or talk to current CCAC member John Savage. Please. Please. Volunteer
  • Infrastructure is needed in Crozet.
  • Restore N Station is going to get bigger
  • Adelaide faces challenges from the CCAC.
  • I’m glad I went, but … sigh.

One Night Only: “Broadway In Crozet”

On Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m., the Western Albemarle High School Drama Department presents “Broadway in Crozet. Up close in cabaret style in the WAHS cafeteria, students will perform songs to raise money for the March production of “Grease.” Admission is by donation, and concessions (snacks and drinks) will be sold.

WAHS Drama performed a similar show last season, when it previewed several numbers from their hit “Beauty and the Beast.” Patrons said they liked the intimacy and comfort of watching a performance from tables. Kids loved the proximity of the actors, as well.
