It’s going to be a reality. Huge thanks to the Crozet Gazette:

Near it, on the east side of the village stores’ parking lot, will be a new 126-bed assisted living facility to be known as The Lodge at Old Trail. The facility will offer services ranging from basic to end-of-life care and memory care, all on a rental model. It is being built by David Hilliard, who has previously built and now operates two assisted living facilities in Vermont. The facility will have underground parking on its basement level, entered from behind the building, and that is being excavated now. There will be three floors above. Completion is expected in 18 months. The building was designed by local architects Russell Skinner and Richard “Jyke” Jones.

Beights Development formally transferred 48 acres, mainly lying along Lickinghole Creek, to Albemarle County in December to be the site of “Western Park.” Beights said he hopes the county will begin improvements soon. The transfer makes possible the creation of a walking path connecting Grayrock and other Jarmans Gap Road subdivisions to Henley Middle and Brownsville Elementary Schools.

What are the Best CSAs in and around Crozet?

I was checking out CSA listings at Local Harvest, and was disappointed by not many listings and many that *were* there were outdated! So if you know of ANY CSA (community supported agriculture) in the area (Charlottesville/Crozet/Central VA), no matter how small, please respond here and I will make a listing of them. Let’s support our local farmers – especially the ones just getting started!

Personally, I usually search at the Buy Fresh, Buy Local site, but would much prefer recommendations.

The Future of Libraries (in Albemarle)

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will discuss the future of public libraries during their meeting on Wednesday.

Closing Jarman’s Gap for the Summer?

Brilliant. I’m no engineer, but I’d wager that they would finish it in a month if they were properly incentivized.

Newsplex reports:

At its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors is expected to endorse a resolution supporting the temporary closure of Jarmans Gap Road (Route 691).

The Virginia Department of Transportation has recommended a complete closure of Jarmans Gap Rd. to traffic for approximately 60 days during the construction project to allow for the installation of a precast box culvert at Powell’s Creek.

The road closure would be coordinated with the summertime public school closing, June through August of 2011. VDOT advises that during the school year, Jarmans Gap Rd. will be reduced to one lane of traffic, as necessary. Complete closure of the road would expedite the installation of the culvert and shorten the overall length of the project.

This could be damaging and isolating to Downtown Crozet. On the other hand, it could provide an opportunity to further develop its own identity.

From Downtown Crozet to Old Trail to 250 West, to Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton and some points west, to Freetown to Batesville Store, to Beaver Creek, to the White Hall Store, to Chiles Orchard. And anywhere else that piques my interest or touches Crozet.

Kuttner drove to Field School straight from the office in Lynchburg where he and his Edison2 team have been building a new generation automobile. In the Fall, the team won the coveted Progressive Insurance Automotive XPrize along with a check for $5 million.

Fundraiser Dance for WARS and CVFD

Fundraiser Dance for Western Albemarle Rescue Squad (WARS) and Crozet Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) on Saturday evening, February 5th.

The band, Salute to Swing, a 17 piece big band from Albemarle, will provide great dancing and listening music in a fundraiser dance Saturday, February 5, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
at the Field School (Old Crozet School)

All ages are welcome.

Starr Hill + Monticello = Beer

~~But will it be on tap in Crozet?~~

From the Washington Times:

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation says it’s working with Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet to offer Monticello Reserve Ale, inspired by what was produced and consumed regularly at Monticello. Brewing beer was among the plantation’s important activities, and the beer was one of the “table liquors” served with meals.

Monticello Reserve Ale is made from a combination of lightly hopped wheat and corn.
