Time for a Community Effort to Combat Crozet’s Thefts

In Community, Crozet by Jim

Instead they should be (only possible if people contact police) compiling a list of items stolen (with all identifying properties including product numbers) and comparing these looking for markets where these items are bought and sold (pawn shops, craigslist.org, etc.) and building a database of fingerprints taken from vehicle windows, doors, etc.

… While it is possible that these are youth committing these crimes, unless they are stockpiling the stolen items in their parent’s homes, I’d doubt it. … Subdivisions are being hit because they are (in the Crozet area) middle to upper middle class, easily accessible, have lots of people coming and going, and the residents don’t have big dogs. … Given the numerous occurrences of the crimes, I would expect someone local or at least familiar with the area committing the crimes and moving the items outside of the area (at a minimum to Charlottesville or the Valley) to sell.

From the Henley Matters listserv: A group of 8th graders is collecting gently used summer clothes and shoes to help the children of Colombia, South America, who have been affected by recent floods. Our family will be traveling to Colombia for the holidays and the items collected will be distributed through different local institutions. This project not only helps those affected by the weather conditions, but it also helps 8th grade students fulfill their community service requirement. Donated items can be brought to school and placed in the box on the lobby labeled “Comfort for Colombia.”

A $13.5 million project to widen a stretch of Jarman’s Gap Road in Crozet will be advertised for construction in January 2011. The right of way phase for this project first began in 1998. “Given the amount of development that has taken place, the improvements are important for providing adequate access,” said chief planner David Benish in an interview. The project will also add sidewalks and a bike lane, which will make downtown Crozet more accessible.

From a reader: I thought you may want to drop a line in your blog that we had some vehicle break-ins in the Grayrock area the night of 12/1. … Folks should make sure to lock their car doors (mine were not.) Just a reminder to lock your doors and look out for your neighbors. I don’t live in Grayrock, and our neighborhood was visited by some vehicle break-ins a few weeks ago.

Will The Crozet Library Be Built Sooner?

Finalizing project plans, and readying the library for contract bids, increases the likelihood of the county receiving donations and grants, Supervisor Duane Snow noted, adding that there are people interested in donating. “But they can’t donate to something when they don’t know what is, what all is involved and whether or not it’s just a pipe dream,” Snow said. A fundraising committee had set a goal of raising about $1.6 million, Halliday said, and though the committee has collected about a tenth of that money, the fundraising campaign has become stagnate because the committee has not been able to tell potential donors when the library might be built or precisely what it would look like. As does lack of confidence or trust in our government to actually get something done.
